NYERMA

In Ladakh there is a big amount of monks – and very few nuns. Some of them stay in a small nunnery in Nyerma under the premises of Thikse monastery. It was built to host the old nuns who stayed with their families before, just working for them and not having the place to learn and practise buddhism. They enjoy a lot being together. But as they are quite old, it is natural, that death comes and there is new space for follow-ups. Shortly ago 5 young nuns from Zanskar moved in, visit the Lamdon school in nearby Thikse, help with the garden and kitchen and get special buddhism teaching in between. The nunnery gets all their income from the joining guesthouse with 6 rooms. With this they have to buy all food and firewood/gas for the long and cold winter. To spread the word a bit more and have some extra income, the young nuns got some cameras in the summer 2016 to create a calender. That was done without propper teaching as there was no spare time for that. But the nuns had fun and did good and interesting photos – so we think of continueing it.
